Although a love interest may seem like the last thing that the perpetually frazzled Joyce Byers needs, a new romance could be just what Stranger Things season 4 owes Winona Ryder’s put-upon heroine. In general, the characters of Stranger Things have not been too lucky when it comes to love. Even the teen characters of Stranger Things have been through the romantic wringer, with Nancy breaking up with Steve before getting together with Jonathan, only for the couple to spend most of Stranger Things season 3 on the verge of a breakup. The adult cast of Stranger Things, however, has definitively been dealt the worst hand by the Netflix hit. Of this adult cast, no one has been a bigger victim of romantic misfortune than Will’s mother, Joyce Byers.

She broke up with Will and Jonathan’s dad before Stranger Things began, dated Bob Newby until he was eaten alive, and was aggressively courted by thebelligerent, unpleasant Hopper in Stranger Things season 3 before his untimely (and temporary) death. After Hopper and Joyce’s romance almost derailed season 3, Stranger Things season 4 needs to fix this issue, and the most obvious route to addressing this is by finally giving Joyce a partner who listens to and supports her.
