The Joker would be in hysterics if he ever learned about Nightwing’s other costumed identity. In Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #1, Nightwing responds to a cryptic message from Jason Todd that ends up with him witnessing Red Hood and the Outlaws undercover in the circus of all places. Returning to his roots as a trapeze artist, Dick Grayson eventually joins the circus too, but this time as an acrobatic clown. This would make Batman’s cackling nemesis burst into laughter, especially considering the Joker’s future attempt at brainwashing him into service during 2020’s Joker War.
In the story by Scott Lobdell and Tyler Kirkham, Dick Grayson receives a text with coordinates from his former enemy and now ally, Jason Todd. Curiosity gets the better of him and Dick Grayson ends up in a circus audience watching Red Hood, Bizarro, and Artemis perform acts before a cheering crowd. Later, Jason tries to push pasts his memories of admiring Nightwing's act in the Flying Graysons as a child to explain he and the Outlaws are undercover, investigating the Russian Mob’s return to Gotham. After learning the Russians were involved in the circus, the Outlaws applied to work as local performers, using their skills and powers to entertain paying customers.

With the help of Artemis, the tongue-tied Jason convinces the initially resistant Dick to join the circus once again. They approach the circus owner Mr. Trotski about the new hire, stating that Dick and Jason are practically brothers who’ve worked together in the past.
