Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Batman.
In a re-release of the deleted Joker scene from The Batman, co-writer and director Matt Reeves explains the tragic disease and backstory that he envisioned for the villain. The Batman sees Robert Pattinson don the cape and cowl as the titular hero, who is still in his fledgling years as the Dark Knight. After Gotham's mayor and a police commissioner are murdered by a mysterious serial killer calling himself the Riddler, the Batman teams up with Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Jeffery Wright) and Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) to track down the madman before he kills again.
Following the capture of the Riddler and his subsequent imprisonment in Arkham prison, the villain has a conversation with another inmate down the hall. Although kept out of focus or masked by framing for the majority of the scene, it is later revealed that the inmate is none other than Batman's greatest foe, the Joker (Barry Keoghan). Shortly after the film hit theaters, Warner Bros. released a deleted scene showing a cut moment where the Batman travels to Arkham Asylum to meet with the Joker in hopes that the criminal will have any information that might lead to the identity of the Riddler. Similar to Clarice Starling's visits with Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, Batman wishes to gain valuable insight from a twisted mind in hopes of catching another.
