WWE star The Miz says he wants to play Johnny Cage in the in-development Mortal Kombat 2 and reveals he has been training for a specific element. Based on Midway and NetherRealms' game franchise of the same name, Warner Bros. recently rebooted the film series with last year's Mortal Kombat, taking an R-rated approach to the material in comparison to Paul W.S. Anderson's PG-13 take. The most recent film centered on washed-up MMA fighter Cole Young as he learns of his lineage as the descendant of iconic ninja Scorpion and his duty to protect the Earth from the evil forces of Outworld by defeating them in the fighting tournament known as Mortal Kombat.
Lewis Tan led the cast of Mortal Kombat as Cole alongside Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Sisi Stringer as Mileena. Helmed by Simon McQuoid in his feature debut, the film hit theaters and HBO Max in April 2021 to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and audiences alike for its bloody action and faithfulness to the games, while some criticism was directed towards its screenplay and performances. Though only a modest box office success with a gross of $83 million against its $55 million budget, Mortal Kombat was HBO Max's most-successful film launch to date upon release, eventually earning it a sequel order from WB, and one name is already looking to get in on the action.
