Fans might have to wait a while longer for the next Mortal Kombat or Injustice game, according to a recent tweet from NetherRealm’s Ed Boon. Ever since the acclaimed fighting game studio announced that it would be winding down support for 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11 last July, fans have been heavily speculating on what NetherRealm will be working on next. While there are many players wishing for a continuation of NetherRealm’s DC Comics-based Injustice series, plenty of leaks and rumors have hinted that Mortal Kombat 12 would be the more likely to emerge.
However, there is one other possible NetherRealm project that fans have been speculating about for the last year and a half: a Marvel fighting game in the style of Injustice. While such a title would seem unlikely given that Marvel has traditionally partnered with Capcom for fighting games, there have been plenty of rumors and leaked roster ideas for this hypothetical NetherRealm Marvel game. Some fans have even gone as far as to suggest that NetherRealm should create a Marvel vs. DC game that combines Marvel’s characters with the line-up from the Injustice series, but NetherRealm hasn’t officially announced any new fighting projects.

Ed Boon recently took to Twitter to address the high demand for more information about NetherRealm’s next major project, be it Mortal Kombat 12 or the equally possible Injustice 3. In doing so, though, Boon may have inadvertently sparked discussion of a NetherRealm Marvel game anew. As reported by Comicbook, Boon told fans that he appreciates how everyone is looking forward to his team’s next game and wishes that NetherRealm could be everywhere at once to work on all the fighting game
