Pilots are an essential component to your strategy in Into The Breach. While it's entirely possible to complete a run using only generic pilots - or even no pilots at all, thanks to your mechs' AI capabilities - having one of the timeline's heroes in the cockpit gives you a considerable advantage in the fight against the Vek.

At the beginning of the game, only the time traveler Ralph Karlsson is available, and if he dies it could be a few runs before you see him again. Most pilots can be unlocked through normal play, but some require a little searching before they'll join you.
Most of the game's unique pilots will appear when one of two conditions are met. If you complete an island after successfully fulfilling every optional objective in every battle there, including killing the boss and defending the Corporate Tower, you may have an option to recruit a new pilot as your bonus. Additionally, the first time you accomplish this feat Ralph Karlsson will always be available from the hangar when you start a new playthrough.
The second way to unlock a pilot is entirely down to luck. Every few battles a Time Pod will crash to the ground. If you send a mech to collect it or win the battle without allowing the pod to be destroyed, you'll receive its contents. This could be a Reactor Core, a new weapon, a new pilot, or some combination of the three. Once a pilot has been rescued from a Time Pod, they will always be available from the hangar when you start a new playthrough.
