The Legend of Zelda series has a lot of elements that make it a great action-adventure game. From tense boss fights and tricky dungeons to a trusty steed and magical items, the games offer just about everything needed to go on an epic quest. However, according to an interview with Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto, one key element to the games should have been included: cow riding
A recently unearthed interview from back in 1999, the same one that revealed Miyamoto also thinks Navi is annoying, has shown that cows were meant to be in Link’s future. In the interview, Miyamoto was asked about the player feedback postcards that were sent after Ocarina of Time was released. The Zelda creator has fond memories of the postcards, but one comment really stood out to him; “I want to ride the cows”. After laughing with the interviewer over the absurdity of Link riding around on a cow, Miyamoto made this bold statement: “This is my promise to you: next game, you will be able to ride the cow. Just a quick jaunt around the pasture, though!”

Unfortunately, that promise didn’t make it to fruition as the follow-up to Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, does not allow the player to travel by bovine. Although, it is interesting that Majora’s Mask does allow players to embark on a side quest involving the cows at Romani Ranch. Plus, completing the cow-protecting side quest will net players the cow mask. So, while Link may not be searching for Majora’s Mask on the back of Bessy, at least he can wear her face to illegally sneak into milk bars.
