Ikea plans to add ultra-fast public charging stations and delivery fleet electric vehicle (EV) charging to more than 25 US retail locations.
In partnership with Electrify America and Electrify Commercial, the Swedish retail chain aims to quadruple(Opens in a new window) its total number of EV chargers in support of its goal to achieve zero-emission home deliveries by 2025 and to cut customer and co-worker travel emissions in half by 2030.
The first devices will start to appear at Ikea locations later this year; by the end of 2023, more than 200 ultra-fast 150kW-to-350kW chargers are expected to be available at locations in 18 states.
Soon, folks in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington will be able to power up their car while shopping for mid-century modern furniture and stuffing their face with meatballs.
"At Ikea, we believe that we must work together with our partners to tackle climate change and create solutions for a greener future," Ikea US CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer Javier Quiñones said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing to innovate around new ways we can make our everyday lives more sustainable."
The company's EV delivery fleet, meanwhile, will be powered by 225-plus Electrify Commercial chargers, marking the first time Electrify America and its business unit are installing public and fleet chargers for a single project.
Sales of electric vehicles reached a record high this year, topping 442,700 in sales between April and June and indicating that limited inventory and high prices haven't dented enthusiasm for moving away from gas-guzzlers.
