Ice Age's Scrat Finally Gets His Acorn In Blue Sky's Final Video, And We're All Crying
Fox's animation studio Blue Sky, which created the famous Ice Age series, was shut down as part of Disney's buyout. To mark the studio's closure, Blue Sky has released one final video, and it's beautiful and sad at the same time. For anyone unaware, the Ice Age series films begin with a running gag about a squirrel named Scrat who is locked in a neverending pursuit to eat a nut. Something always goes wrong, sometimes tragically so, and Scrat never gets his little nut.
But now, in this final video from Blue Sky, Scrat finds his nut, clutches it to his chest, and hoists it above his head--preparing for someone or something to take it away, as he's been conditioned to expect. But it doesn't happen. Scrat is finally, finally, able to eat his precious nut without something going wrong. When he's done consuming the acorn, he skips away to his next journey in life. It's a happy and sad video, and might be a metaphor for Blue Sky itself as a studio.
The video is appropriately titled «The End.» It was created by a small team of artists at Blue Sky who came together to make one final video before the studio shut down for good. «This shot is a farewell, a send-off on our own terms,» the studio said in the video's description.
In February 2021, Disney announced that it was closing the Oscar-winning animation studios, whose movies generated $5.9 billion at the box office. 450 jobs were impacted in the move.
Blue Sky released 13 movies over the years, but its most famous work was the Ice Age series. The company also released the Oscar-winning short, Bunny, in 1998. Some of the studio's other properties included Robots, Horton Hears A Who, Rio, and most recently, 2019's Spies In Disguise.
