The reboot of from Sony Pictures has set its cast, with and four other actors named for the high-profile movie.
Although little has been revealed in terms of specific plot details, it’s known that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing the reboot based on a screenplay that she co-wrote with Sam Lansky, while Leah McKendrick is credited with the initial script. Neal Moritz, a producer of the original film, is producing the reboot.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that the model for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer is the 2022 Scream, which rebooted the slasher franchise and brought legacy characters alongside new characters. It was previously reported that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were in talks to reprise their roles from the first two movies. As of now, it’s unclear if they’ll be back.
Mendes is known for her seven-season run as Veronica Lodge on Riverdale, in addition to her recent starring roles in the romcoms Muisca and Upgraded, both for Prime Video. Previously, Mendes had a supporting role in the time-loop romcom Palm Springs and worked with Robinson as the lead of the teen drama movie Do Revenge.
Mendes stars alongside Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline, both listed as being in talks to lead. The announced cast so far also includes Tony nominee Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, who appeared in an episode of Atlanta Season 3 and six episodes of Hulu’s Tell Me Lies, and Jonah Hauer-King, who portrayed Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
The original I Know What You Last Summer was released in 1997 by Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson and director Jim Gillespie. With a cast including Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, it grossed $72 million at the box office and led to a 1998 sequel. There was also a 2006 follow-up, which was not theatrical and did not include any former cast members.
