Sonic Frontiers has been getting gameplay trailers and first looks, and these first looks have been wildly uneven in terms of reception. Given Sonic’s history of his games being wildly uneven themselves, this is no surprise, but it has been five years since the release of Sonic Forces and fans are looking for a return to form. Even when trying to draw conclusions from gameplay footage, Sonic Frontiers is proving to be a tough game to analyze.
Every triumph and disaster has only made Sonic a more interesting character in popular culture. From Sonic 06’ and Sonic Boom to Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors, the newer games all keep the spirit of Sonic alive regardless of the games’ quality. The pre-release speculation from hands-on previews of Sonic Frontiers is part of the fun, but it can also be terrifying knowing Sonic's lowest lows have been disastrous before.

Regardless of whether or not the game is open-world, Sonic games haven’t ever been this exploration-based and Frontiers is a huge step for the series. However, only time will tell if Sonic Frontiers is a stepping stone towards a better future or if it’s a well-beloved title in its own right. As of now, the game still looks promising, but SEGA and Sonic Team haven’t shown off enough of the game to prove Frontiers will be a success.
Sonic Frontiers seems to have a fine base style, with the explorable open areas being littered with smaller challenges to complete in a given timeframe. Super Mario Odyssey worked in a similar way, and ifSEGA's newest Sonic title can harness the exciting environment design of that game, it should be a fun to play.
