The Harry Potter films depicted Albus Dumbledore as one of the most powerful wizards of all time — but an evil Dumbledore potentially been even more powerful, and maybe even have overpowered Voldemort. Throughout the entire Harry Potter franchise, Dumbledore is shown to be an extremely talented wizard, whose power even Voldemort fears. He is known to have studied a variety of areas in magic and one of these is the dark arts, although he never practiced it.
Dumbledore embarked on a mission with Grindlewald to find and unite the Deathly Hallows. The power it would have given them and Grindlewald’s use of the dark arts from this led to their fallout and battle, shown in Fantastic Beats: The Secrets of Dumbledore. From the point where Dumbledore ends his relationship with Grindlewald, it cements his morality and decision to not use dark magic. Throughout the franchise, Dumbledore is a pioneer for good and never abuses how powerful he is for his own gain, though audiences are split on how morally correct some of his decisions were in the name of this greater good.

Though Dumbledore’s refusal to use dark magic is a just decision, it also is restrictive, as it limits his range of abilities, meaning that an evil Dumbledore could have theoretically been far more powerful. Even when battling Voldemort, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore never uses lethal magic. In the duel, Dumbledore is definitely on par with Voldemort, and Voldemort is seen to be annoyed that he can’t overpower Dumbledore.
