House Of The Dragon Season 2 Will Have More "Traditional" Storytelling
The Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon is coming back for a second season, and showrunner Ryan Condal has teased more of what to expect from the sophomore season. Be warned that this story contains spoilers for House of the Dragon.
Speaking to Deadline, Condal said Season 1 laid the foundation and now Season 2 will settle into the «more traditional rhythms of storytelling.»
«We did the hard, complex work of setting up this entirely new dynasty and family and all the players in Season 1 and took the time to do all the character work so you understood where everybody fell along the line of are they on Alicent's side of the equation, Aegon's side or are they on Rhaenyra's side and Daemon's side,» Condal said. «The excitement now is that we get to fall into the more traditional rhythms of storytelling and see where that story is going to go.»
Condal went on to say that the story in House of the Dragon is a «Shakespearean or Greek tragedy,» and it'll be fun to see how that plays out.
The showrunner added that the original Game of Thrones was a «big epic sweeping fantasy about light and darkness, ice and fire.» But House of the Dragon tells a more focused story about the Targaryen family tearing itself apart from within.
«Now that all those pieces have been set on the board, I'm really excited to tell the next chapter, to see what happens now that Viserys is gone and is no longer keeping a lid on things,» Condal said, referring to Paddy Considine's character who died in Season 1.
House of the Dragon Season 2 is now in production, and filming remains underway despite the writers' strike. HBO has not announced a release date for Season 2, but the season will have eight episodes, compared to 10 for Season 1.
