Katana Zero, the indie game that garnered positive reviews from players and critics (and awards panels), is now out on mobile. Brought to Android by Netflix, Katana Zero soft launched in the Philippines a couple of months ago. It’s now available for players all over the world.
Developed by Askiisoft, it first dropped in April 2019. It’s a single-player game that was nominated for the Game Award for Best Independent Game and the BAFTA Games Award for Debut Game. The game’s neo-noir setting blends psychological horror and dark comedy, making it quite unique and enjoyable.
In Katana Zero, you step into the shoes of Subject Zero, an amnesiac assassin living in a dystopian city. With a katana (a type of Japanese sword) in hand, Zero has the ability to slow down time and predict the future. In between all these, you unravel Zero’s past through intense side-scrolling action.
Your main job is to take out all the enemies in each level without getting hit. You can slow down time and use things around you to your advantage. When you’re not fighting, you get to make choices in conversations with other characters, which are in the form of dialogue trees.
Zero is a war veteran with precognitive abilities and works for his psychiatrist, who doubles as his handler. As he takes down drug dealers, the media labels him as the Dragon, a supposed serial killer. The game’s deep, engaging story goes perfectly with the detailed design and pixel art. Take a look at the trailer below.
Katana Zero Netflix is fast-paced and has been developed thoughtfully. It has little details like burning kill contracts or drinking tea after a mission. Before the action starts, Zero puts on his earphones and plays his music, which fits perfectly with the game’s soundtrack. The dialogue system allows you to interrupt or choose your responses dynamically.
All these features make Katana Zero a really nice pick. Why don’t you check the game out on the Google Play Store?
