Horizon Forbidden West will feature over 40 machines, far more than the 26 that were featured in Zero Dawn.
Since Horizon Forbidden West was announced, we've seen several new machines, including the boar-like Bristleback, Burrowers, Clamberjaws, and Slitherfangs. Although we've seen a lot of machines so far, it wasn't clear how many the player would encounter in the game, but the recently revealed Piggyback guide gives us a good idea of the final number.

The Horizon Forbidden West Piggyback guide was recently made available for pre-order and, besides being 650 pages long, hints at how big the game is going to be. Besides using words like "massive" to describe the map, it also confirms the number of machines that Aloy will run into.
As reported by Push Square, in the description for the book, one section mentions that it'll have tips for how to deal with all of the machines in the game. It says, "Over 200 pages are dedicated to dissecting the game’s biggest attractions: the 40+ intricately designed machines that stalk the Forbidden West. Learn how to evade their every attack and always have the best strategies at hand to take them down."
The use of "40+" means that it could be anywhere between 41 and 49, but it seems more likely that it's just a little less then 45. Horizon Zero Dawn featured 26 machines for Aloy to run into, so there are close to double the amount for the game's sequel. The guide also mentions that there are over 200 pages of the guide just focused on the machines, which should give an indication of how much more advanced they're going to be compared to the first game.
