Reality stars Alana «Honey Boo Boo» Thompson and Lauryn «Pumpkin» Shannon, famous for starring on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, revealed they were not aware their mom was getting married. When the world met their mother, June «Mama June» Shannon, she was in a relationship with Alana's father, Mike «Sugar Bear» Thompson. Mama June and Sugar Bear split in 2014, and a few years later, Mama June started dating Geno Doak. Her relationship with Geno was abuse-filled and caused her to become an addict to drugs and alcohol. In 2019, she left Geno, and in 2022, she went public with her relationship with Justin Stroud. Mama June and Justin dated for just a few months before getting married.

While Mama June was developing her romantic relationships, her relationship with her daughters deteriorated. During the stages where Mama June battled addiction, Alana was forced to be under the care of Lauryn since June was unfit to care for her.
