It was already pushed back once, but rumours suggest Hogwarts Legacy’s development woes are still ongoing.
Alongside Gotham Knights, Hogwarts Legacy was meant to be one of Warner Bros.’ big game releases for 2021, but both wound up being delayed to 2022.
While Gotham Knights appears to be on track to launch this year, insider Colin Moriarty believes Hogwarts Legacy won’t make its 2022 launch window, suggesting it could be delayed until 2023 at the earliest.
Speaking on his Patreon exclusive Sacred Symbols+ podcast (transcribed by VGC), he says ‘I’m hearing behind the scenes that game is not coming out this year, and that it’s in some sort of trouble.’
He doesn’t elaborate on what kind of trouble the game is facing, but another delay is certainly believable considering there have been no real updates on Hogwarts Legacy since it was announced, and that was in September 2020.
All that’s really known about the game so far is that you play as a customisable wizard or witch, who attends Hogwarts in the late 1800s. It’s being developed by Avalanche Software, which previously worked on Disney Infinity, and, judging by the teaser trailer at least, the graphics look very impressive.
It could be that the mooted WB Games split is interfering with development since it’s still not clear which studios would remain under parent company AT&T and which would be placed under a new company.
That’s the reason why it’s suspected that NetherRealm is making another Mortal Kombat sequel instead of Injustice 3, since the latter’s use of DC Comics characters could run into licensing complications.
Aside from that, Hogwarts Legacy’s existence remains tainted by Rowling’s own controversial comments on transgender people.
