Hogwarts Legacy takes place roughly a century before the Harry Potter books, and therefore likely won't feature some spells that are used in the latter's setting. The history of magic in the Wizarding World is long, harkening back to ancient times, but its uses are constantly evolving. Including Harry Potter himself, the late 1990s saw the confluence of many great witches and wizards, with Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort perhaps the most notable two. Both pushed the boundaries of what is possible with magic, but there were a number of other figures who invented spells throughout the 20th century.
The open world action-adventure game from Avalanche Software is set to tell an original story, but with notable wizarding families possibly included in Hogwarts Legacy alongside the return of characters like Nearly Headless Nick, the state of the game's magic itself will likely be contextualized within known timeline events. Hogwarts Legacy looks to begin in 1890, with the player taking control of a fifth-year student who has begun their magical education late for undisclosed reasons. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, its grounds, and the surrounding Scottish countryside will be the digital playground as players improve their wand-work and potion making skills.

While the novels frequently get into the finer points of spell casting, the movies are notorious for being unspecific when it comes to magic duels. Hogwarts Legacy may take a similar approach, with the Shield Charm used liberally to deflect a variety attacking spells, but Hogwarts Legacy's adaption of Harry Potter canon is still likely to delve into the minutiae of different magics.
