When Halo Infinite's multiplayer landed on PCs and Xbox consoles late last year, many long-time fans and newcomers to the series were pleased with it. As the first free-to-play Halo title, more gamers than ever were able to get their hands on it and engage with its satisfying, well-crafted gunplay. As time went on, however, some cracks began to show. The progression model was very controversial, as players would complain about grinding for hours for minimal rewards, even after purchasing the Battle Pass. Several gamers also expected more maps and game modes, though it was believed that 343 Industries was planning on delivering a massively expanded experience over the course of the following months.

While Halo Infinite has added new content since its launch, it has not been enough for many fans. High-profile video game influencers like MRags, CouRage, and FaZe Nickmercs have openly criticized the state of the game on Twitter, lamenting the fact that the game had so much potential from the outset. More specifically, Faze Nickmercs argued that Halo Infinite should have incorporated a battle royale mode, while MRags raised the issues of cheating and sparse updates. CouRage was vaguer, suggesting that Fortnite has significantly more active players than Halo Infinite.
