Once it launches, RTX Remix will breathe new life into the visuals of many classic games, but some talented developers managed to improve the lighting and visuals of older games even before NVIDIA's modding platforms. Among these developers is sultim_t, who recently released the Half-Life: Ray Traced mod.
The mod, which can be downloaded from here, doesn't introduce proper ray tracing but real-time path tracing which achieves similar results. While the visuals of the first entry in the series haven't aged that well, creating a weird contrast between the path-traced lighting and low-quality textures, it is undeniable that what sultim_t achieved is nothing short of impressive.
As mentioned above, the Half-Life: Ray Traced mod isn't the first path-tracing mode released by sultim-t. In the past, the modder released impressive DOOM, Quake, and Serious Sam: The First Encounter mods, which greatly improved these classic games' visuals.
The Half-Life series has been on hiatus for a long time, and fans of the franchise by Valve had no other choice but to replay the classic games released years ago. The hiatus, however, ended with the release of Half-Life: Alyx, an excellent VR game and a worthy entry in the series. According to rumors, a follow-up to the VR game is currently in the works, but no official announcement has been made, so it is not yet clear if Half-Life has entered yet another hiatus.
