French journalist Chris Klippel claims RAGE 9, the new Rockstar game engine powering Grand Theft Auto 6, will be ahead of its time. The proprietary Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, otherwise known as RAGE, has powered most major Rockstar Games-developed titles since 2006's Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis. GTA 4's incredible Liberty City-set open world especially showcased the engine's capabilities, which were further put to the test in Red Dead Redemption (2010).
Since abandoning Criterion Games' RenderWare technology for its own proprietary engine in the mid-aughts, Rockstar has remained at the forefront of pushing the limits of graphical fidelity, physics, and performance in the industry. The horse animations in Red Dead Redemption alone demonstrated how well RAGE captured Rockstar's obsessive attention to detail. Of course, Grand Theft Auto 5 upped the ante further still, evidenced by the impressive character switching system. But the physics, dynamic systems, and graphics in Red Dead Redemption 2 were what truly set the bar, immersing players in an open-world adventure whose detail arguably remains unprecedented nearly four years on. Apparently, the studio could very well outdo itself in its next major project.
