Workers at the Apple store in the Grand Central Terminal of New York have reportedly started to collect signatures in support of their ongoing efforts to form the company's first union.
The Washington Post reports that organizers have started to hand out signature cards to other employees. If more than 30% of them express their interest in joining a union, the group can petition the National Labor Review Board, at which point a formal vote can take place.
"Grand Central is an extraordinary store with unique working conditions that make a union necessary to ensure our team has the best possible standards of living in what have proven to be extraordinary times with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and once-in-a-generation consumer price inflation," the organizers say on their website, Fruit Stand Workers United.
The organizers say the union would be affiliated with Workers United—which they note is the same organization supporting the unionization of Starbucks coffee shops across the US—and would therefore enjoy the same benefits (and pay the same dues) as other affiliated groups.
"All workers should be organized," Fruit Stand Workers United says, "no matter what company they work for. Apple is no exception, and many in our store deserve better than struggling to afford housing, to provide for their families, and to pay down overwhelming debts."
More information about Fruit Stand Workers United's motivation can be found on the "mission" page of the group's website. Apple didn't immediately respond to request for comment.
