God of War’s PC version attracted around 50,000 concurrent players on Steam on its release day.
That’s according to data published by SteamDB, which shows that the Sony Santa Monica title peaked at 49,411 concurrent players on Friday.
It means that, at No. 22, God of War was unable to break Steam’s Top 20 games on Friday, in terms of concurrent players, but it’s worth noting that virtually all of the titles above it on release day were multiplayer games.
The figure is comparable to Sony’s other big first-party PC release Horizon Zero Dawn, which peaked at 56,557 on its release day. Days Gone managed 27,450.
Because these are Steam-only figures, they do not include sales of PlayStation’s PC games on the Epic Games Store, where Days Gone, Horizon and God of War are all available.
God of War was released for PS4 in April 2018 and had sold 19.5 million copies as of August 2021, according to Sony. Its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, will be released for PS4 and PS5 in 2022.
Although this port was mainly handled by Canadian studio Jetpack Interactive, the game’s original creators at Santa Monica Studio helped supervise the project. A senior developer revealed this week that the PC port of God of War was in development for at least two years.
PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst said last June that the platform holder was “still early on in our planning for PC” but that consoles would remain the priority for new releases.
PlayStation recently acquired Nixxes Software, which is best known for its work on the PC versions of Square Enix properties including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman and Thief, to help it bring its games to the platform.
