Genshin Impact Player Gets Refund After $20,000 Spending Spree
A Genshin Impact player recently spent a staggering $20,000 on pulls, though her father was thankfully able to get refunded. miHoYo's action role-playing game features a wide range of characters and weapons to unlock, though players must pay into the title's gacha mechanic to obtain them. The title is entirely free-to-play, but Genshin Impact's gacha pull rates can cost players a large sum of money if they are not careful.
First released in 2020, Genshin Impact allows players to journey across the fantasy world of Teyvat completely free of charge. However, while the base game is free, a slot machine mechanic forces gamers to pay real money for a chance to unlock new characters, weapons and resources. Genshin Impact's microtransactions are essentially gambling, with one pull having a random chance to unlock the desired item based on pure luck. While many players pay little mind to this mechanic, since it is entirely optional, others see it as a manipulative way for miHoYo to make money. Genshin Impact also has character costumes that can be bought, adding to the title's monetization system.

Product manager Lim Cheng Mong was eventually notified of the shocking credit card debt, which his daughter had accumulated over nearly one hundred individual transactions. Thankfully the father was eventually able to get a refund for the entire sum, avoiding a potentially very serious financial situation.
