Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5, in particular, seems set to become one of the go-to graphics engines in the industry now that it is out in the wild. With this in mind, Gears of War developer The Coalition has given players a quick taste of what future games may look like running on the latest Unreal Engine.
The Coalition, formerly known as Black Tusk Studios, is a Canadian-based developer and is currently part of Xbox Games Studios, serving as one of several studios creating games exclusively for Xbox platforms. It is best known for its work on the Gears of War series, effectively taking over the development of the series from Epic Games after Microsoft acquired the rights for the series in 2014. While its first work on the series was 2015's Gears of War: Ultimate Edition remaster, the studio's first new entry in the main series was 2016's Gears of War 4, followed by 2019's Gears 5 and 2020's turn-based tactics game, Gears Tactics.
Unreal Engine 5 Available to All Developers Now
Given its history with Gears of War and former studio executives, such as Rod Fergusson, who came over from Epic Games, The Coalition is extremely familiar with the capabilities of Unreal Engine. The studio highlight this familiarity with its new cinematic test demo, The Cavern, running in real-time on Unreal Engine 5.
