Friday Night Lights Remake in Development at Universal TV
More than a decade since its conclusion, Universal Television has reportedly started development on a remake of the acclaimed NBC sports drama. The original series starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton was based on H.G. Bissinger’s 1990 novel of the same name.
Universal Television’s Friday Night Lights remake hails from showrunner Jason Katims and Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment, with Kristen Zolner set to executive produce. Katims and Grazer served as executive producers on the original show. Further details about its plot are still under wraps, but the project is expected to be set again in the world of high school football. However, the new story will now reportedly revolve around new characters instead of bringing back original characters.
The original series was created and executive produced by Peter Burg. The cast also starred Aimee Teegarden, Taylor Kitsch, Jesse Plemons, Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, Scott Porter, Gaius Charles, Michael B. Jordan, Jurnee Smollett, and more. During its five-season run, the show received multiple awards, including a Peabody Award for Broadcast Excellence, and two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Writing. At the moment, it currently holds a near-perfect Tomatometer rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Friday Night Lights centered on the rural town of Dillon, Texas, where winning the state football championship is prized above all else,” reads the original show’s official synopsis. “Coach Eric Taylor guides a high school football team through pressure-filled seasons while dealing with struggles relating to his own family. The interactions between the team members, current and former players, supporters, coaching staff and regular townsfolk address many of the issues facing small-town America.”
