Ford issued multiple recalls for a total of 737,000 vehicles sold in the US, nearly half of which may set on fire.
As Reuters reports, the recall affects the following vehicles:
2020-2022 Ford Escape (1.5L)
2021-2022 Ford Bronco Sport (1.5L)
2021-2022 Ford F-150
2022 Ford F-250
2022 Ford F-350
2022 Ford F-450
2022 Ford F-550
2022 Ford Maverick
2022 Ford Expedition
2022 Ford Lincoln Navigator
For the Escape and Bronco Sport, there's a risk of engine fire due to the engine oil separator housing potentially cracking, which then leads to an oil leak and subsequent fire. So far, eight engine fires have been reported, but thankfully no injuries caused because of them.
For the rest of the vehicles in the list, the fault relates to an electric or electric-over hydraulic brake system not braking then a towed trailer is attached. So far, 67 "improper function" reports have been filed, but again, no injuries caused.
The braking problem can be fixed with a software update for the trailer brake control module. The oil separator fault is a much more invasive procedure and likely requires a new separator and seals be fitted following an inspection.
If you believe your vehicle is included on this recall, the best thing to do is contact your local Ford dealer for further information and to schedule a repair. In total, 345,451 Ford Escape and Bronco Sport vehicles are impacted by the engine fire risk, with a further 391,836 vehicles at risk of brake problems.
