Hephaistos, the boss of the new Savage version of the Abyssos: The Eighth Circle raid, has been nerfed in Final Fantasy 14’s latest patch. Patch 6.21, which was released late last night, reduces Hephaistos’ hit points in both phases, making him easier to kill than players that ran the raid after it was released in late August.
According to Square Enix, the reason why Hephaistos’ HP was reduced was that the dev team became too good at killing him while the raid was still in testing. Yes, this implies that Square Enix has become too good at its own game to properly judge difficulty for casual players.

"In our endeavor to create an encounter more challenging than Asphodelos: The Fourth Circle (Savage), the team responsible for final adjustments spent a great deal more time than usual working on balance for this raid battle," wrote Square Enix in the 6.21 patch notes.
“Under normal circumstances, the DPS of this team serves as a base for determining a boss HP value that results in clears as close to the time limit as possible. However, as extra time was dedicated to testing this battle, the team's overall performance proved to be higher than usual. As a result, the base values used for adjustments were too high, with final values roughly 1% higher than intended.
“We have reduced the boss's HP to bring the battle in line with our initial balance projections. We apologize for any inconvenience caused."
The notes would imply that the reduction to Hephaistos HP is a mere 1 percent. Players will have to run the Abyssos: The Eighth Circle (Savage) to determine whether than 1 percent reduction truly makes much of a difference.
