Mamma Mia! The recently unveiled teaser for the Mario movie has certainly caused a stir online. Specifically, Mario’s, ahem, flat character design has really upset the masses. This has led to many taking matters into their own hands and redesigning Mario to look more like the cheeked-up plumber we all know and love.
Over on Reddit, several artists and fans have shared their attempts at fixing the moustachioed protagonist. While each adds its own personal touch to the design, the overarching theme is making the character chubbier to match his video game counterpart. I mean, I need my Mario to be both tough enough to take on Bowser, but thick enough to make me question the possibility of him sliding down those pipes so easily.

The redesigns also correct the weird proportion of Mario’s face to his head, and plump up that beautiful moustache.
The comments under the redesigns show people’s agreement that the movie version is a bit off, with many happy to see a more video-game-accurate depiction of the character. Others, me included, just need a Mario that fills out those overalls in all the right places.
Of course, Mario’s slimmer figure is not the only issue that has plagued the upcoming film. When news broke of Chris Pratt’s casting as the Goomba-hopping hero, there was quite a reaction from the internet. I mean, how could Hollywood’s most average Chris live up to the iconic Mario voice of Charles Martinet? Turns out, to some fans anyway, he can’t.
