One of the standout gags in Family Guy is the feud between Quagmire and Brian, which officially started in season 8. The disturbance in their relationship came out of nowhere, with the notably lascivious Quagmire (voiced by co-creator Seth MacFarlane) taking issue with his best friend Peter’s dog, Brian (also voiced by MacFarlane). As the disdain advances into mutual territory, this long-running joke provides a welcome and entertaining plot point in future episodes.
Family Guy has introduced some of the best rivalries in animated sitcoms, but deep-seated contempt between main characters like Quagmire and Brian demands adept reasoning and big payoffs. While it’s easier for audiences to pick sides with secondary characters, central figure rivalries are harder to delineate. Family Guy succeeds in establishing the hate-fueled relationship between these two and matches their wrath with over-the-top sabotage and combat.

Quagmire’s hate towards Brian comes to light in season 8, episode 7 “Jerome Is the New Black” when Peter tells Brian he can’t join the guys’ friend group because Quagmire thinks he’s annoying. Replacing Cleveland, who later returns to Family Guy following the cancellation of The Cleveland Show, is the A-plot of this episode, but Quagmire’s explicit description of Brian’s character flaws over a dinner date is arguably the best scene.
