It's pretty hit or miss when it comes to how effective ranged units are in strategy RPGs. In Expeditions: Rome, the Sagittarius class is the proud wielder of the mighty bow - and luckily for us, they are fantastic at it.

It's hard to build a Sagittarius that can't do their job properly, but what you really want is one who excels at their job. There are a few different specialisms available to these ranged warriors, and it's important not to spread out their techniques too thinly - having specialists for each possible situation you could find yourself in is a reward in itself.
As with the other classes in the game, the Sagittarius class is split into three skill trees. These all focus on different playstyles, but they all offer valuable skills for every Sagittarius - especially if you know what you're doing.
A Sagittarius is best built as an archer - it's in the name, after all. That's not to say that they can't do other things, but when they are so good at controlling a battlefield from a single spot, it's a shame to build them any other way. The best way to use a Sagittarius is through locking down chokepoints and sniping enemies from across the map, though there will always be occasions where a bit of melee magic works wonders.
This is pretty much what it sounds like - put everything into ranged skills and turn the unit into a fantastic Sniper. There's some versatility to this build, though - moves like Interrupt and Rebuke give the Sagittarius some great options for the times they have to stay on the move. A build like this will have exceptional damage capabilities.
