ABC sitcom The Goldbergs is heading into season 10, after a season 9 that saw big changes take place. Created by Adam F. Goldberg, The Goldbergs is a comedic take on events from Goldberg's own childhood, and actually beat Stranger Things to the 1980s nostalgia push that's never really gone away since the mid-2010s. Of course, The Goldbergs follows in the proud tradition of prior nostalgia-driven sitcoms like That 70's Show and Happy Days, as well as dramedies like The Wonder Years. As these series prove, retrospectives of the recent past often prove great fodder for weekly laughs.
Unfortunately for The Goldbergs, the family-oriented comedy that's brought so much enjoyment to so many since 2013 saw its own set become a source of drama during season 9. In late 2021, Goldbergs viewers were shocked and stunned by the sudden news that Jeff Garlin, who had played Adam's dad Murray since the beginning of the series, was no longer part of the cast. Garlin was accused of on-set misconduct, leading to his abrupt exit.

Garlin's already shot material was still used during season 9, but thanks to the surprise mid-season nature of the departure, producers opted to keep Murray around after via previously unaired footage of Garlin, as well stand-ins and CGI edits. It made for a strange time for The Goldbergs, as the change definitely wasn't always a seamless one.
