The ending of The Cuphead Show! season 1 left Cuphead and Mugman in some serious trouble—but will there be a season 2? The Cuphead Show! is a series based on the viral video game Cuphead, which stars the pair of brothers Cuphead and Mugman, who are of course cartoon cups. The brothers lose a casino game that promises their souls to the Devil, but they make a deal to fight the Devil’s debtors to save their own souls. The Cuphead game is based on 1930s animation styles, which made it a good candidate for its own animated adaptation. Netflix Animation first announced that the Cuphead game would be adapted into an animated series in 2019, with the show premiering ahead of the planned video game expansion The Delicious Last Course.
In The Cuphead Show! season 1, Cuphead and his brother Mugman go to a carnival to skip out on their chores. There, Cuphead plays a game of skeeball that is rigged to steal the player’s soul when they lose. He goes on a winning streak that annoys the Devil, who ultimately causes him to lose. Now owing his soul to the Devil, Cuphead and Mugman go on misadventures while trying to outwit the Devil at every turn. Unlike the game, the adventures in the show center more on Cuphead and Mugman having fun and trying not to get in trouble with their guardian Elder Kettle than boss fights or collecting souls. The season ends with the brothers meeting a new character named Ms. Chalice, who gets them arrested after helping them break into a cookie factory.
