The Ruins in Horizon Forbidden West share some interesting similarities with the Shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In each game, these challenge areas offer puzzles that vary in difficulty and can be completed by collecting either an Ornament in Horizon Forbidden West or a Spirit Orb in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are many differences between these challenges, like the fact that there are only nine Ruins compared to the 120 Shrines, but a lot of the puzzles share the same core concepts.
Horizon Forbidden West's Ruins are a collection of broken-down buildings that contain special relics called Ornaments. Each Ornament can be collected and used as a light projection in the Las Vegas area, but there are also other resources to find in every Ruin. The Shrines in Zelda: Breath of the Wild play a much bigger role than Ruins in Horizon Forbidden West. Shrines make up a good portion of the game and give Link a way to increase his health and stamina through the Spirit Orbs they contain.
