In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players can commit various crimes, and each one incurs a bounty of a certain amount of gold. How much depends on the crime, with bounties ranging from a few gold pieces to 1000. If they don't want to have a price on their heads, however, they can utilize stealth to make sure that they're not witnessed breaking the law.
Skyrim places a heavy emphasis on freedom of choice, and part of that is allowing players to be any kind of Dragonborn that they want, including a criminal. Stealing, breaking and entering, and even murder are all available options for those on a quest to be the bad guy in Skyrim. The Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood are two organizations centered around illegal activity, but if players don't want to join them, then they can just as easily limit themselves to being a petty criminal. Although committing crimes has consequences, they're relatively minor and are dealt with easily. If the bounty is small enough, then the guards of Skyrim's holds will simply ignore the player for a while so long as they don't break the law further.

Whether players commit major or minor crimes in Skyrim, there are ways of dealing with the bounties that they bring. Paying them is perhaps the easiest option, even if it does come at the cost of having all stolen goods confiscated. They can also go to prison for a short time and either serve their sentence or break out. The maximum sentence is only one week - possibly because of some kind of prison population problem in Skyrim - so players will never be in jail for long.
