Reese Witherspoon revealed several key updates for , the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series at Prime Video.
In an interview with People, Witherspoon discussed the casting process and shared when the series begins production.
“I’m really excited. We start in March,” Witherspoon said. “I’m really excited because we’re going through the casting process right now, and we’re picking who is going to play the young me. It’s kind of a trip.”
In Legally Blonde, Witherspoon played Elle Woods, the sorority girl who heads to Harvard to win back her ex-boyfriend. Elle ends up studying to become a lawyer and discovers her newfound independence. Witherspoon is thrilled to help find the actress who will play a younger version of her character.
“It’s so exciting too, to watch these young girls that are so filled with enthusiasm and excitement and completely,” Witherspoon added. “There’s so many good ones. That’s the hard thing because there’s so many good people to choose from.”
In May 2024, Prime Video announced it ordered the Legally Blonde prequel series Elle. Per Amazon’s synopsis, “Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.”
Creator Laura Kittrell will be Elle’s showrunner and executive producer. Kittrell is best known for her time as a writer and executive producer on Black Monday, Insecure, and High School. Witherspoon will executive produce with Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, a part of Candle Media, and Amazon MGM Studios will produce Elle.
Released in 2001, Legally Blonde became a critical and financial hit, grossing over $141 million on an $18 million budget. Witherspoon received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Elle Woods. The film’s success spawned a sequel, 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and the Broadway production Legally Blonde: The Musical.
