Nobody will be surprised to hear Elden Ring sold well, but just how well seems to have surprised everyone, including the developer and publisher. In less than three weeks, more than 12 million copies have been sold across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.
As Eurogamer reports, publisher Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware have confirmed this is, "a fantastic start for the new franchise." However, that doesn't just mean Elden Ring 2 is all but guaranteed to be made. Elden Ring is being treated as an IP that will expand "beyond the realm of games."
It's unclear what the expansion will include, but "characters and other intellectual property" are both mentioned as part of it. Hopefully that means more than a range of collectible figures and an art book.
As to how Elden Ring managed to sell so well so quickly, the joint press release points to the game being released simultaneously worldwide in 14 different languages, as well as being available on PC and two console generations (Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5). From a consumer's point of view, it surely helped that the game wasn't priced at $70 (unlike the Demon's Souls remake on PS5), instead adopting the more conventional $60 price point across all platforms.
Although we'll be waiting a long time for official confirmation, Elden Ring 2 now seems inevitable. There was a three year gap between Dark Souls and Dark Souls II being released, so don't expect to be playing the next Elden Ring before 2025. Perhaps we'll get some premium DLC packs for the first game much sooner, though.
