As Bandai Namco celebrates 12 million masochists in Elden Ring, it hints at ‘expanding the brand beyond the game’
Just two weeks after launch, Elden Ring has reached a colossal 12 million units sold worldwide. According to a press release from publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer FromSoftware, 1 million units were sold in Japan. The open-world action/RPG hybrid launched on February 25.
It has been consistently among the best-selling games on Steam, as well as Xbox and PlayStation platforms. The impressive sales figure encompasses all platforms, as well as both physical and digital versions of the game. To put this number into perspective, Dark Souls 3 reached 10 million units sold four years after its initial release date.
From the official press release, Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki said: “It’s astonishing to see just how many people have been playing Elden Ring. I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team.” The president and CEO of Bandai Namco, Yasuo Miyakawa, was also pleased. Miyakawa showed his appreciation by saying that he “would like to use this opportunity to give my thanks to all our fans who have brought Elden Ring into their gaming life.”
Beyond celebrating the sales of the game, the press release also confirms that Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have plans for “expanding beyond the realm of games.” It mentions that the 12 million sales are a “fantastic start for the new franchise,” and that fans can look forward to more of Elden Ring as an IP.
It looks like we will be seeing more from Elden Ring in the future. It’s hard to say whether that could be a TV show, comic book, or anything in between. It could even be a George R.R.
