Ensha of the Royal Remains, one of Elden Ring's most mysterious and cool-looking NPCs, tries to kill the player with seemingly no reason or warning. Before the attack, Ensha spends the entire game leaning against a wall in the Roundtable Hold, silently observing the protagonist. Needless to say, information on Ensha is difficult to find, and can only be gleaned through hints dropped by other NPCs. After all, lore is often kept secret in Elden Ring, even for major characters. However, with enough research and a little imagination, Ensha's actions start to make sense.
Ensha only invades the player's world once they obtain one-half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and return to Roundtable Hold. Even on the edge of death, Ensha remains silent, but his master, Gideon Ofnir, does offer some insight. He suggests that Ensha is basically his servant and that Ensha attacked the player's Tarnished without Gideon's permission. The description of Ensha's armor, which refers to him as an adherent of Sir Gideon, further illuminates their relationship.

All this insinuates that Gideon previously ordered Ensha to retrieve the Haligtree Secret Medallion, so Ensha presumably attacks to steal it from the player; whether Gideon is actually in the dark about it is unclear. Probable cause has been established, but there are more pieces of the puzzle scattered throughout Elden Ring's massive map of the Lands Between. An NPC named Albus, who is disguised as a pot in Liurnia of the Lakes, holds the medallion piece that Ensha wants. Albus tells the player that his village is in ruins, that "the cursemongers
