Many of the enemies found throughout the Lands Between in Elden Ring are deeply frightening. Previous FromSoftware games such as Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice are known for — in addition to their difficulty — their many creepy enemy archetypes. Elden Ring, however, embraces horror with truly terrifying creatures that are designed to scare players as much as possible. Many of the hardest Elden Ring enemies capitalize on common human fears, such as darkness and arachnophobia, in an effort to unsettle and instill a feeling of dread while engaged in combat, or while using the game's basic stealth mechanics to avoid detection.
Elden Ring, as FromSoftware's newest release, expands on its long-running formula of «Soulsborne» games by broadening its scope to an open world. Players can quickly traverse the game's regions, known as the Lands Between, by riding on the back of the trustworthy steed Torrent. During their journey across the land, players will encounter a wide range of biomes — everything from poison lakes and swamps to entire castles atop volcanos and mountains. This large and diverse world allows players to encounter many different types of creatures and enemies. Beginning the game in the starting area of Limgrave, the Elden Ring player character, known as the Tarnished, will typically encounter relatively normal enemies. Humans, wolves, and other regular wildlife can be found all over the plains and forests. However, as the Tarnished ventures further into the world, more and more disturbing enemies can be discovered.
