There are a lot of things the Tarnished can do early on in Elden Ring, one of which is customize what they are wearing after defeating a particular early game boss, but the feature has proven to be better in theory than in practice and that frustration was demonstrated in a recent meme showcasing the limitations of the alter garment function.
For its attempt at a true open-world, FromSoftware implemented a series of changes to its longstanding Souls-like formula to makeElden Ring more accessible for a wider audience. Customization of weapons and fighting styles became the most diverse it has been in FromSoft games to date, allowing players to adjust aspects like Ashes of War and scaling stats so that they can use what suits them best. Prior to Elden Ring's release, many thought that the new alter garment function would provide a similarly extensive customization avenue when it comes to something the FromSoftware community likes to call "Fashion Souls." In reality, however, the feature is not nearly as diverse as other customizable elements in-game.

Reddit user GilgameshWulfenbach shared a meme that compared expectations versus reality for Elden Ring's alter garment feature. Sharing a similar feeling to many in the post's comments, the expectation was that most of the game's armor sets would allow for certain elements to be removed or changed, including color swapping, allowing for greater armor customization in Elden Ring. What players got instead was a limited feature that essentially removes capes from certain armor sets and GilgameshWulfenbach's meme gets the point across with the help of The Incredibles' Edna Mode.
