PlayStation Blog recently interviewed multiple game developers to ask who the best FromSoftware boss is. Hidetaka Miyazaki was the first asked, and his favorite is Old Monk from the original Demon's Souls. The Old Monk is unique from almost any other boss in the games, and this is why Miyazaki is so proud of it. He says that there was a lot of pushback in terms of the design of Old Monk. It is something Miyazaki really wanted to do form a visual and gameplay perspective, but others did not believe it was possible. However, the team pulled it off, and Old Monk became one of the most memorable bosses from any FromSoftware game.
With Demon’s Souls, there were a lot of mechanics throughout the development that were difficult to design. For instance, the asynchronous online features were complicated, but I think the Old Monk encompasses those tribulations and how we pushed through and made something we were proud of.
