If your climate anxiety hasn't peaked yet, today's Earth Day Google Doodle should do the job.
Rather than its usual cheery illustration, Google Doodle is marking the day with a bleak timelapse highlighting the effect of climate change on our planet.
Visit Google.com or click on the company logo on its other pages to watch the looping timelapses, which use real imagery from four different locations to show decades of melting snow, deforestation, and coral bleaching.
Return to the page throughout today to view scenes of glacier retreat at Mt. Kilimanjaro's summit between 1986 and 2020 and in Sermersooq, Greenland, from 2000 to 2020; coral bleaching across the Great Barrier Reef's Lizard Island over just three months; and forest destruction by bark beetle infestation due to rising temperatures and severe drought in the Harz Forests of Elend, Germany, between 1995 and 2020.
Most images were collected through Google Earth and the US Geological Survey, with additional support from nonprofits Climate Central, The Ocean Agency, and Iclei Europe.
"Acting now and together to live more sustainably is necessary to avoid the worst effects of climate change," the Earth Day team wrote about today's Doodle. Search for "climate change" to learn more about its causes and effects, and what actions you can take to stop it.
Now that Google's whipped you into an environmental frenzy, take a deep breath and read about what the company has been doing to build a carbon-free future—including helping partners address climate change through funding and data access; offering sustainable transportation options via Google Maps; and investing in carbon removals.
