EA is developing a new game set in The Lord of the Rings universe for mobile devices that will be playable in beta form this summer.
Rather than a new, epic adventure on PC and consoles, EA is partnering with Middle-earth Enterprises and The Saul Zaentz Company to create a free-to-play mobile experience. It's called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, and described as a collectible role-playing game based around a "strategic, social-competitive experience."
Malachi Boyle, Vice President of Mobile RPG for Electronic Arts is promising players a combination of "high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylized art," in which to go, "head-to-head with their favorite characters."
Gameplay will take the form of turn-based combat, "deep collection systems," and a story to hold it altogether, along with key characters from both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit making appearances along the way.
As it's a free-to-play game that's inevitably going to include microtransactions in one form or another, you'll need a persistent internet connection to play. EA is planning to offer a limited regional beta test this summer, which suggests the final game could be launched in time for the holidays this year and possibly alongside Amazon's TV series in September.
