The quality of color electronic paper took a big step forward this week with the launch of E Ink Gallery Plus.
As Liliputing reports, the previous generation (E Ink Gallery) offered a maximum of 4,096 colors and a contrast ratio of between 10-14%. For Gallery Plus, E Ink increased the colors supported to 60,000, and upped the contrast ratio to 40%. The end result is a clear leap over what came before as the image below shows:
The new display uses E Ink ACeP, which is a full-color electronic ink system made up of cyan, magenta, yellow, and white pigments. Gallery Plus panels will be offered in 13.3-inch, 25.3-inch, and 28-inch size options, with E Ink going so far as to say they are comparable to color prints, while also having the added benefit of being able to change what is displayed as often as you like.
For now, Gallery Plus isn't technology we are going to see a company like Amazon use for a new generation of Kindle. E Ink is targeting the digital signage market and wants to see its technology used to replace printed posters and public information displays. In fact, Gallery Plus is already being used for signage in Taipei.
With the big upgrade in color and contrast, though, color e-readers are surely becoming a more viable option and ultimately a replacement for existing models. It's a case of when, not if anymore.
