The focus on Gohan in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero gives the movie the potential to fix the biggest issue with the Cell Saga’s ending. It’s been confirmed that the second Dragon Ball Super movie will finally shift the attention from Goku and Vegeta to Gohan and Piccolo. This plan is drawing big comparisons to the Cell Saga, which made Goku’s son the hero of the story.
Though often seen as the definitive Gohan story in the anime and the highest point for his character, the Cell Saga didn’t go as far as it could have in letting the character be the hero. That was clearly the point of the conclusion of the final battle with Perfect Cell, but Dragon Ball Z held back a bit by still making Goku instrumental to Cell’s defeat. Even when it was finally time for Gohan to step up, the anime had to let Goku get one of the story’s biggest hero moments. Using his Instant Transmission move, Goku sacrificed himself to save the Earth’s from Cell’s self-destruction. After that, Goku’s spirit performed the Father-Son Kamehameha to help Gohan finish him off.

For the first time in years, the opportunity exists for Gohan to once again take the spotlight and save the day. Since Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is making Gohan and Piccolo the heroes who will have to stop the Red Ribbon Army, this is the anime’s best chance to fix the problem with the Cell Saga’s ending, which was Goku’s role in thwarting Cell’s plans and saving the Earth.
