Double Fine Productions has released an epic-length documentary about the making of Psychonauts 2.
Double Fine PsychOdyssey is a 32-part documentary which follows the entire development process of the game, from original conception to the release of the finished product.
PsychOdyssey follows on from Double Fine Adventure, a 12-hour documentary about the making of 2014 title Broken Age.
The trailer for PsychOdyssey shows Double Fine founder Tim Schafer ending the previous doc in 2014, before being asked “so what’s next?” and replying: “Psychonauts 2”.
The entire 32-part series can be watched on YouTube, and Double Fine has created a playlist so viewers can watch the entire thing in order.
The description for the documentary reads: “Ten years after the release of their flagship video game Psychonauts, Double Fine Productions returns to its most celebrated franchise with Psychonauts 2.
“Now facing the pressure to produce a worthy sequel, the studio must confront overly ambitious designs, poor morale, technical challenges and financial woes, all during a turbulent span of time for the world.
“Double Fine PsychOdyssey is the direct continuation of the acclaimed series Double Fine Adventure, and offers even deeper insight into the passion, humor, and heartbreak of video game development.”
The sequel to 2005’s Psychonauts was revealed at The Game Awards in 2015, with Double Fine going on to raise over $3.8 million on crowdfunding platform Fig to help develop the title for PC, Mac, Linux, PS4 and Xbox One.
Following a series of delays, Psychonauts 2 was eventually released digitally for PC and consoles in August 2021, with the game also optimised for Xbox Series X/S.
