Actor Dominic Monaghan, who played the hobbit Merry in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film series, has reacted to Amazon producing its own Lord of the Rings TV show and how it's going to be available on a streaming service.
Speaking to ComicBookMovie, Monaghan said, «I think it's fine!»
He said The Rings of Power being available for streaming on Prime Video is representative of a wider trend of streaming becoming more and more popular. «That's where the whole way we get our content is going,» the actor said.
«I think if you tried to make the Peter Jackson series of films now with some of them pushing into three hours and twenty minutes for the extended editions, people would say, 'We can't do that. We don't have the bandwidth,'» Monaghan said.
«Nowadays, I think people want slightly more bitesize chunks of their content. I'm the same! It's great to watch creatives handle that world in a different way and I wish them luck with it,» he added.
Monaghan said he will tune in to watch The Rings of Power and chat to his friend, podcast co-host, and fellow hobbit actor Billy Boyd about it.
Monaghan previously reflected on the 20th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings film series, saying he is happy and proud to have been a part of such a gigantic franchise. However, he does not re-watch the movies like so many fans do. In fact, he hasn't seen them in 15 years.
The Rings of Power premieres September 2 on Prime Video. A full-length trailer recently premiered, offering the best look yet at Amazon's big-budget fantasy series.
