A new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer focuses on the variants unleashing their powers upon the world. The film, which is the first direct sequel to 2016's Doctor Strange, was directed by Sam Raimi, who is best known for two titanic cinematic trilogies: the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films and the classic Evil Dead horror films. In keeping with his history, this film is primed to blend superhero comic spectacle with a horror bent, following the devastating consequences of Doctor Strange's actions in the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 film Spider-Man: No Way Home where Peter Parker enlisted the sorcerer to cast a spell that went wrong and caused the multiverse to begin collapsing.
Although the collapse of the multiverse was prevented by the end of No Way Home (at the cost of the world forgetting who Peter Parker is), the ripple effect of that event will be felt in full force in Doctor Strange 2. The film, which also features Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch fresh from the events of WandaVision, will feature a cavalcade of multiversal variants of both her and Doctor Strange. As a terrifying new enemy emerges, they will have to fight alongside returning character Wong (Benedict Wong) and new hero America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez).
