Director Sam Raimi recently shared that the plot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was influenced by several important MCU films. The follow-up to 2016's Doctor Strange takes place after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) cast a spell to protect Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and accidentally opened the multiverse, causing alternate realities to clash with their own. In the upcoming film, the sorcerer teams up with fellow sorcerer Wong (Benedict Wong), Avengers teammate Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), and newcomer America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) to fix the problem with the multiverse.
The film will feature a comprehensive cast of characters, including variants, alternate versions, and cameos of prominent Marvel heroes and villains. This will include the return of Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) from the first Doctor Strange film, as well as new versions of older characters such as Professor X, portrayed by Patrick Stewart, who first played the character in the original X-Men film series, and Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), who made her debut in Marvel's animated Disney+ series What If...?. As a result of the multiverse premise, the sequel's storyline promises to be intricate, weaving in a large cast of characters.
